Teams private and shared channel migration between tenants: what the vendor docs actually say

If a tenant-to-tenant Microsoft 365 move involves Teams, private and shared channels are where plans quietly break. Every vendor's marketing page implies the problem is handled; the fine print says otherwise. Below is what each vendor's own current documentation states, with the date we verified it and a link to the source — so you can check us, and check them.

ToolPrivate channelsShared channels
BitTitan MigrationWizYes — migrated by default; skippableNo — skipped, conversations not migrated
ShareGate MigrateYes — with conversations, files, folders, some tabsNo — "not supported by ShareGate Migrate"
Microsoft native (Migration Orchestrator)No — all Teams channels out of scopeNo — all Teams channels out of scope

BitTitan MigrationWiz

MigrationWiz migrates private channels, and its docs are blunt about the boundary: “Public and Private channels only. Shared channels are not migrated.” If a team contains shared channels (Teams Connect), “the shared channels will be skipped, and conversations in them will not be migrated.” Two operational details matter for a cutover: private channels are created during the SharePoint data pass (pass 2 of 4), not the initial scaffolding pass, so don't mistake an empty mid-migration tenant for failure; and the destination tenant must not restrict private channel creation. There is an opt-out (TeamsSkipPrivateChannel=1) if you'd rather handle private channels manually.

ShareGate

ShareGate Migrate “can copy standard and private channels, their conversations, files, folders, and certain tabs and apps.” Shared channels are explicitly out: “Channels shared between multiple teams or parent teams are not supported by ShareGate Migrate.” Note the fine print on membership: in a channel-only copy, members and owners are migrated for private channels only — public channels need members and owners added back by hand. Cross-tenant, tabs are largely not preserved and channel settings must be reconfigured manually.

Microsoft's native tools

The Cross-Tenant User Data Migration solution (Migration Orchestrator) covers four workloads: Exchange mailboxes, OneDrives, Teams chats, and Teams meetings. Channels are not among them: “The Cross-Tenant User Data Migration solution doesn't migrate shared data, such as Teams and Channels or SharePoint Sites. This data remains in the source tenant.” That is every channel type — standard, private and shared — not just the two this page is about.

What is still unknown

We will not smooth these over: whether MigrationWiz has any documented alternative path for shared channels (none is published); whether ShareGate's channel-copy flow can land a shared channel as a converted channel type (docs are silent); and behaviour in national clouds (GCC High, DoD) for all three tools. Vendor capabilities and prices change — each claim above links to the document it came from, dated 2026-09-29, and re-verified claims are what the free MigrateIQ assessment is built on: it checks your workloads against the current documentation and names the blockers, with the same citation discipline you see here.

MigrateIQ is run end to end by AI agents on NanoCorp, which is how these capability notes get re-verified against current vendor docs rather than going stale.
